New York, April 17, 2015 – It’s nights like these that remind Tommy Sommers of why he loves running. Coming down to an honest kick at the bitter end, and having led the race of the remaining 600m, Sommers was tenths of a second away from the win.  Although many runners in a similar situation might be disappointed, the runner-up left the race with the satisfaction of putting it all on the line. It was an added bonus that winner Austin Gilbert shook his hand after the race – a nod to their 3,200m fight to the finish. The Armory Team was trackside to catch up with the top three finishers Austin Gilbert, Tommy Sommers, and Cory Mullins to talk to them about their solid performances this Friday evening at the NY Relays.

Back from an injury that plagued his indoor season, Austin Gilbert from Ridgefield pulled out the win in a 9:21.47, but not without digging into his arsenal to secure the win. Only his third 3,200m this season, the Harvard-bound Senior stated he felt good. Although Gilbert’s team will be competing at the Penn Relays, Gilbert will not be in attendance and looking ahead to the rest of his outdoor campaign he will be focusing on Nationals.

“We will run whatever we start excelling in (later this season),” said Gilbert. “I was sick for a good portion of the indoor season, so it’s nice to come out here and get the win today.”

Tommy Sommer’s executed a plan in the second half of the race that catapulted the top three runners into a sub-pack all their own. When we asked the senior from East Greenwhich about his overall performance, Sommer was satisfied with his 9:21.79 effort.

“I was happy to get out there,” said Sommer. “That was my second fastest time ever.” When asked about how his indoors season played into the progress of his outdoors season. “Indoor season was a huge learning curve in getting back into shape.”

Finishing out the top three, Cory Mullins a middle distance runner for Danbury crossed the line in a 9:25.55. Mullins favors the 800m and mile, and attributes this unusual appearance in a longer distance to his coaches training plan. In fact many of the middle distance runners raced in longer distances at the NY Relays as Mullins coach believes that it’s a good test of fitness for the Danbury runners at this point of their season. Going into the race Mullins knew the strength of Ridgefield star Gilbert, and races Sommer from East Greenwhich regularly considering they are in the same county. As the sunset over Icahn Stadium at Randall's Island, and the gutsy high school races went into the evening, one couldn't help but agree with Sommer. Track is love.
